Since more and more folks are getting excited about the “new” Ubuntu and the forks like Crunchbang and Lubuntu, this trademark is cropping up like fungus on a rampage.

Yes, we all know it’s the same Ubuntu with a newer kernel and updated default apps. Yeah we know it inherents all of Linux’s old issues plus adds a few of its own. But now they’re adding A NEW DESKTOP!* And if that’s not reason to get your underpants all gooey, I dunno what is.

*even though additional desktops have always been available though the package manager.
But now it's OFFICIAL! and stuff.

I’m sold. Particularly by “The new desktop is very attractive with a new start menu icon and a slim, attractive look:” ... followed by a blank screen with a single grotty install icon and a bunch of blurred rubbish in the toolbar.

“As you can see, it comes with Chromium as the default choice for web browsing, which is a good choice and works quite well for most tasks.

“Here’s a screenshot of Chromium displaying our site, for instance (note that this review was done in a virtualbox instance so the screen size is small in the screenshot below):”

So little time; so much fail.

Sigh. I don’t really care, honestly, but in what possible way does LXDE “save energy?”

Mute those pixels! Leave that RAM alone! Slow the refresh rate down to one frame a second, because who could possibly tell the difference?

What the hell is this mtPaint sold there as 'graphics editor’ ? Did they realize that GIMP is a huge fail for a Photoshop 'replacement’ and thought why not trying to clone MS Paint then ?

@ChrisTX

And in the usual FOSS style, there’s not one but at least two mspaint clones… the other being Kolorpaint for KDE. And again, these clones are behind the times, as they’re clearly based on pre-Windows 7 versions of paint.

@DrLoser

Yep… that taskbar is such a blatant ripoff of XP it’s not even funny. Not only does the start button look the same but they’ve manage to include the quicklaunch area too… with a multiple desktop manager just to remind you this is supposed to be *nix. For people who hate Windows so much they certainly don’t mind copying it. Oh, and there’s hell to pay if MS copies, but not Linux. Go figure.
