ummmm, anyone watch television? most of the scientists on the discovery and history channels are using either OSX (very common), or Windows (not as common but it happens, especially when on the government dime). I have yet to see someone use GNOME, KDE, or anything else anywhere other than Linux conventions and other really nerdy gatherings, or companies that are IT focused to begin with.
