A place-holder for TMs making fun of Cloud Computing.

Loon: Linux Desktop rules, because it’s free!
Sanity: It doesn’t actually do anything I want to do.
Loon: Well, the alternative is Microsoft or Apple. You don’t want that, do you?
Sanity: Um, yes. I do.
Loon: You are an offence to Freedom! We have Google on our side. The future is bright! Cloud computing will rescue us!
Sanity: Isn’t that exactly like time-sharing? Where’s the Freedom in that?

Mostly added in honour of Anonymous and our beloved Administrator, both of whom seem worried — and I’m sure this is an entirely irrational worry — that Cloud Computing necessarily involves a complete abdication from control of the source. Not to mention the content.

Mind you, Freetards presumably think that “Contradiction” is some sort of elocution school based in the posher parts of Managua.

The problem with “cloud computing” is that most 3rd-world countries have very crappy internet speeds and access. Cloud computing will leave Africa down on the ground.

Off-topic, but I’m not entirely sure about that. Africa is a huge source of mobile phone growth. Even if the networks only manage the equivalent of 2.5G — technology, not speed — they’ll get something better than the 57Kb we all lusted over in the late ’90s.

If I were an African kid, I think I’d rather have that than some idiot peddling a plastic computer powered by donkey poo-poo (this automatic censorship is really getting annoying) with something insulting like Ubuntu 9.10 running on it.

But I’m not an African kid. So, frankly, I don’t know.

@DrLoser

Even more off-topic: tragically, Ubuntu just happens to be the name of a very poor municipality in Southern Africa. It’d be kinda like someone pushing “Deep South Dixie Linux” to New Yorkers. Just another feather in the FOSS cap of bad names.

I wonder how much Mr Shuttleworth contributes to his home town?

@DrLoser

He used British citizenship to get out of South African taxes. But, shhh.

Hah, I’m not worried about cloud computing, I just like to point out that none of Google’s cloud apps are open source. They’re the epitome of proprietary, but because Google made them its somehow alright in the eyes of FOSS.

@Administrator

Always the case. As is demonstrated time and again, their issue is not “freedom” but irrational hatred of Microsoft and endless double-standards.

Just as another interesting off-topic note… if you Wiki “Freedom Party”, you get a disambiguation page which states:

Freedom Party is the name of several political parties, often of right-wing political ideology.

It seems an alarming trend that fraternities which use “Freedom” in their names or slogans are often advocates of the complete polar opposite.

What, not a single vote?

I’m suicidal.

@Delano

Oh, I don’t know. Check out the Freikorps, or Ayn Rand.
