You have more freedom because Steve Jobs is dead.

Richard Stallman

“Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died.”

“As Chicago Mayor Harold Washington said of the corrupt former Mayor Daley, “I’m not glad he’s dead, but I’m glad he’s gone.” Nobody deserves to have to die – not Jobs, not Mr. Bill, not even people guilty of bigger evils than theirs. But we all deserve the end of Jobs’ malign influence on people’s computing.”

You know, I was kind of expecting a Need2BFree post along those lines. Still, why talk to the monkey when you can talk to the organ grinder, eh?

All the social graces of a baboon in the mating season, that man.

Glad he is dead, now maybe (i repeat, maybe) we can have Apple products that aren’t Wall Gardened that much.

#3 Posted by fewt on Oct 7, 2011 10:30 AM

It was the most unbelievable thing I have read in a long time. RMS is a disgrace to humanity.

#4 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 7, 2011 10:43 AM

I do hope that was ironic, Pirate Boy.

And kudos to Fewt for finding this dreck.

Why do people avoid saying bad things about recently-deceased people? Is it to be considerate to his friends and relatives, or is it just political correctness?

I know for a fact that he won’t be hurt by the words, and I think it’s unlikely to meet anyone actually close to him on the internet.

Anyway, I tend to avoid talking about recently-deceased people in general. I feel obliged to say good things even if I don’t like the dead person. And when everyone is doing the same, there is just no meaningful conversation to be had.

#6 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 7, 2011 12:57 PM

@IMGX64:

Other than the obvious fact that it is in shockingly poor taste and is universally regarded as uncivilised?

Well, here’s the reason. What Stallman is doing here is to shrink the 56 years of life of one person – the good, the bad, the insane, the great, all the bits that make this one person a human being – and to turn all of it into a single post-script to his own ideology. Don’t you think that that is a little perverse, even schitzy?

You can look at it as an 'ad hominem’ in reverse, if you will. But however you look at it, it leaves a pretty sour taste in the mouth.

“Glad he is dead, now maybe (i repeat, maybe) we can have Apple products that aren’t Wall Gardened that much.”

Or, you know, just don’t buy them if you don’t like the experience? Last time I checked, Apple doesn’t force anyone to buy an iPhone.

“Other than the obvious fact that it is in shockingly poor taste and is universally regarded as uncivilised?”

Yes, I know it’s an obvious fact, and I would never do it, but I’m wondering why are humans like that?

I mean, insulting a living person is uncivilized because it would hurt his feelings (yet, people do it all the time). Whom does insulting a recently-dead person hurt? And even more puzzling, why is insulting a long-dead person completely okay?

#9 Posted by imgx64 on Oct 7, 2011 1:21 PM

“Or, you know, just don’t buy them if you don’t like the experience? Last time I checked, Apple doesn’t force anyone to buy an iPhone.”

I hate that argument when applied to everything. The whole point of kurkosdr’s comment is that he doesn’t want to buy one because they’re so locked down, but would consider buying one if they opened up a bit.

#10 Posted by bmsuppository on Oct 7, 2011 1:50 PM

Well boohoo? I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to die without an iPhone so instead of whining incessantly about it, just get a life? There is more to life than shiny iDevices.

“Why do people avoid saying bad things about recently-deceased people? Is it to be considerate to his friends and relatives, or is it just political correctness?”

I was making jokes the moment I heard about it.

Despite how irritating I found the “think different” iTard community that latched on to Apple, I respect the guy. He really did have vision and promoted innovation and user experience. Hell, he made Unix desktop a mainstream reality.

These days, the Apple elite are fewer and less vocal, now that their products are all mainstream. They’re not part of an exclusive club anymore, so there’s nothing left for them to defend really.

#12 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Oct 7, 2011 3:28 PM

Is Mac OS really like a UNIX?

Is it really similar enough to UNIX? Because I seem to remember some people complain that it isn’t.

Just asking.

——————————————-

RMS is a complete and total cretin, by the way.

Durden would do much better without him.

#13 Posted by administrator on Oct 7, 2011 4:14 PM

I’d say MacOS is probably the most successful Unix there is. It’s got its own shell on top of it, but it’s all there for the most part. Hell, you can even run X11 on it if you really feel masochistic.

Also, iOS is Unix-based as well. A few people I know who jailbroke their iPhones and iPads had direct access to the underlying file system and it was almost identical to OSX.

I added the exact quote in case the cache ever disappears.

#15 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Oct 7, 2011 4:46 PM

Malign influence?

Malign influence??!

MALIGN INFLUENCE?!?!?!?

———————

It’s incredible…

He calls the largest and greatest innovator in the sphere of personal computing “jailer” and his achievements “malign influence”.

Well, now we know; RMS is crazy (not just bitter, mean and stupid).

#16 Posted by administrator on Oct 7, 2011 5:25 PM

Yeah, without Jobs there wouldn’t BE a personal computer. Perhaps that’s how Stallman wanted it? Keep all the computers hidden away in the MIT labs.

#17 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Oct 7, 2011 5:53 PM

Well, the Durden fanatics do always cheer for the return of thin clients… by any name necessary.

#18 Posted by imgx64 on Oct 7, 2011 10:51 PM

“I was making jokes the moment I heard about it.”

The iPhone 4S is so bad it killed Steve Jobs. rimshot

(Sorry for the lame joke. It was burning inside me, but I didn’t want to sound like a jerk)

#19 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 8, 2011 2:29 PM

Admin and IMGX64:

No worries. Private jokes are one thing (they’re related to the reason that chimpanzees smile. They are innate), but public prognostications are an altogether different thing.

A couple of hilarious “poggies” to make all of us feel better:

“You are misinterpreting my comments as vicious.”

Indeed.

“From a scientific point of view, death is a necessary part of the process of life. All living things die so that a new improved generation can take over. It is unpleasant for the individual and close associates, but it is great for everyone else.”

No other comment.

It’s been a long time since I read such .. I don’t even know what to say…

#21 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 8, 2011 3:06 PM

Well, if it helps you any, look up Futurism in the 1930s.

There’s all sorts of ugly stuff in there. You can even side-step Godwin’s Law!

“I am not a nazi or a fascist. I am a futurist!”

#22 Posted by ChrisTX on Oct 8, 2011 8:10 PM

God everytime I read this a new wave of hate rolls through me. How can you even fit something as retarded as this in such few words?

#23 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Oct 8, 2011 9:22 PM

It’s the magic of Stallman; he can do wonders with words … ugly wonders, that make people wish he hadn’t.

#24 Posted by ChrisTX on Oct 9, 2011 8:34 PM

I knew it.

“Richard Stallman’s comment on Steve Jobs’ death is polite and direct.”
POLITE? WHUT?

Bonus points for this: “Here at Techrights we care about what’s true, [...]”
>Techrights
>Truth
RIGHT.

#25 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 10, 2011 11:45 AM

Ah, Tech Rights, the place that makes Richard Stallman look relatively normal …

I’d have thought that was impossible, but Roy can do this sort of stuff effortlessly, can’t he?

#26 Posted by fewt on Oct 10, 2011 2:09 PM

@DRLOSER – “Roy can do this sort of stuff effortlessly, can’t he?”

I won’t be glad when he’s dead, but I’ll be glad when he’s gone.

Hey, it works when you spin it back on them too!

Power without Responsibility – the prerogative of the Harlot throughout the ages…

#28 Posted by reactosguy on Oct 11, 2011 3:27 PM

Why isn’t this a FUD?

#29 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 11, 2011 3:29 PM

Because it’s a TM.

#30 Posted by reactosguy on Oct 11, 2011 3:37 PM

It makes more sense as a FUD because it’s showing RMS’s morbidity.

#31 Posted by DrLoser on Oct 11, 2011 3:55 PM

Sadly, the world disagrees with you on this one.

Also the author of the TM.
