One of the more peculiar trademarks (and that’s a category with some wicked competition), this one commonly appears on “top-reasons-to-use-Linux” lists (of which the Internet is in no short supply – if Linux were so great, I’d think it’d stand on its own merit and wouldn’t require persuasion, but what do I know?).

The assumption, of course, is that as soon as something goes boink in Windows, you need to shell out cash and contact Microsoft. Because, like, there’s no places online where you could possibly get help for Windows problems for free.

Such trademarks are often qualified with references to “the community” (because Windows, Mac and other OSes don’t have communities, y’see) and how the Linux community is like the best, most loving and most perfect example of human cooperation in history.

Well, that certainly trashes RedHat’s business model, then. I’m sure the loons will come back with something like “well, it’s free so long as you pay your annual subscription.”

Or possibly just “all you need is a knowledgeable SysAdmin.” An essential tool for the full Joy of Desktop, in my experience.

Not only Red Hat. Canonical, creator of the Linux world’s poster child, makes money by offering a paid support service. But, shhh.
