Almost inevitably, this trademark will manifest itself in one of the following ways:

  • All software/operating systems have faults, Linux just has less.
  • I’ve tried (Insert string of OS names here. Reference to Windows is obligatory. Extra internets if you mention Mac and/or BSD). All of them have problems, but in my experience, Linux simply has less.

This is one of my personal favorites, for two reasons. First, every time I see it, it’s quoted almost verbatim, as if being read from a script. Secondly, it’s usually uttered by smug Linux fans who think they’re being very gracious by conceding faults in Linux, when in actual fact they’re still saying their OS is superior to all others.

The phrase “Linux just has less” should be “Linux just has fewer”.

Oh and keep in mind, that if you mention something what Windows or Mac can do better you get to hear that a) you’re a troll and/or b) you paid by far too much.

@ChrisTX

My conversations where this pops usually follow this pattern:

linux just sucks less.
how so?
well, reference 9-year old Windows problem
but that was fixed?
oh, and windoze limits my freedoms.
how so?
it doesn’t allow me to see the source and make modifications.
oh okay. so how have you modified linux to your tastes?
i don’t code.

As a paid Grammar Nazi Shill, I wish to complain.

There is nothing at all wrong with the phrase “Linux just has less.” You have to ask yourself the question, “less of what? Fewer of what?”

(OK, that’s two questions. Thank you for counting.)

Linux (Desktop) has less of the following abstract singular collective nouns:

  • Credibility
  • (Decent) Design
  • Relevance
  • Utility
  • Sex appeal
  • Traction

Linux (Desktop) has fewer of the following pluralisable nounal phrases:

  • (unbroken) Applications
  • Reasons to install

Er, well, that’s about it.

The confusion arises from the opposite comparative, which is “more.” Lonnbois will always tell you that their favourite distro has “more,” and perhaps it does, if you want to compare “more” against “fewer.”

What it doesn’t have is “more” as compared against “less.”

@ DELANO and his “me vs. fanboy” conversation.

OMG! EPIC LULZ! :D

Especially since i know that kind of conversation very well! :D

But, truth be told, i don’t exactly code either. (... apart from basic HTML and some really lightweight Java)
