I don’t think we’ve had this one yet, principally because nobody but a neckbeard would care one way or the other. Following this prize piece of “angels on a pin-head” argument from LHB, however:

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

... I think it’s worth registering.

GNU/Linux, yes, that has a toney sort of ring to it. Obviously the missing link in marketing. (Actually I think Gus the Gorilla is down the hall.)

Of course, if it was really GNU, it would run on the Hurd OS. And if it didn’t have a kernel (which may be Linux, may be *BSD), GNU would be totally useless.

Admittedly, GNU being totally useless is not exactly a quantum leap down the ladder, but we need to use precision and laser-beam accuracy if we’re going to make fun of …
