“If it compiles, it is good; if it boots up, it is perfect.”
The REAL Linus’ law, forget that Many Eyes nonsense.

If it compiles and runs, your bug testing is done.

And facepalming ensues …
Fast boot. Fast. Never forget what computer users the world over, from John Dvorak on down, are looking for.
Fast boot.
Oh, and Power Management.
Wait …
But we have speed – and plenty of it – last I checked the system of Durden took less than three minutes to boot!
Seems plenty fast to me, I mean… it’s completely reasonable.
It would only be unreasonable if one would continue running it. The best option that OS/Durden provides is, after all, shutdown.
Or, if that fails, just pull the cable.
FastShutdownSmokinCapsXAteMyWorkTripleSonicEffinBoom™.
Yes, we are looking at the wrong end of the telescope, here.
My phone takes over 2 minutes to boot and nearly a minute to shut down. Does this really matter? No! Because I don’t turn off my phone.
Who are these people who still turn off their computers rather than just closing the lid or putting them to sleep?
@Administrator:
Freetards. (or is it GNU/Freetards these days?)
I turn my computer off… but it’s a desktop. I couldn’t give a damn about boot times, because I have patience. As long as it takes less than 15 minutes, I suppose.
Windows 7 shuts down near instantly, btw.
The only time my computers ever shut down is for updates.
I have to say I do like John Rose’s letter re boot times in preface to the unix hater’s handbook
“Windows 7 shuts down near instantly, btw.” – yep, true. Boots up faster than I have time to get another cup of coffee too. I usually only shut down my desktop when I’m going away for more than a day (uptimeuptimeuptime!!!), but when I’m back and boot it up, it’s fully functional ages before my modem has made its connection, and/or I had time to hang up my coat, and put the stuff from my bag away.
