I have a question: If open source code is so important, why does Ubuntuforums run on a closed-source forum package?

If I could only count the number of times I’ve seen the “max requests” error that mySQL gives when it can’t handle the six, or so, concurrent connections on a shared host.

Its a perfectly sane debug error message to show to your users. They all need to see that.

Since I deal with MySQL daily, I’ve gotten into a habit of caching every little bit of information that can be cached within reason. Even when I increase max_connections, it still likes to gripe at concurrent connections.

I like to live dangerously by having a, more or less, unmanaged mysql instance driving this entire site.

I could set up some sort of backup procedure, but it’ll probably be easier to pay slicehost to do automatic backups for me.

Hoppi, we don’t allow personal photos here.

This entry almost fooled me into thinking something was wrong with the site.

@sirsane: I actually flinched the first time I saw it.

By the way, Hoppi is here because the Ubuntu Forums are down with this very error.

The UF users account for more visits the the LHB today, although their average stay time is significantly lower. haha.

Chlorus, I was wondering the same, so I asked in the IRC:

the long story short is at the time the forums were set up, VBulletin was the only product capable of scaling to our demands…
with that said, we are pretty impressed by phpBB 3 and do have plans in the pipelines for evaluating it to replace vBulletin.
(...)
with that said I used to admin some phpBB2 setups and did not have any confidence it can scale up to even 10% our userbase
and from our adminning point of view, the “closed” nature of vB doesn’t really bother us.
I mean, the downside is that our users don’t have the software to start their own UbuntuForums :)
but from our side, there’s a large community, we have access to the sources, etc etc etc

So they basically say, they’re not on phpBB etc., because phpBB2 was a big disappointment, but now with version 3 it’s absolutely awesome and can 100% replace vB, as it got all it’s features.

I’m not sure whether they ever tried phpBB 3 or it’s converters, but if they really switch to it, we can be sure that this time was not the last time UF was miserably broken.

And here we see them admit to the superiority of a closed-source product. Thanks for taking the time to go over to their IRC!

@admin no, I am here because I’m tired of hearing bashing, exaggerations and mistruths!

I’ll get bored eventually because I’m aware this isn’t getting far, but it gets on my nerves!

I never advocated those sites either, I just don’t like to hear Linux bashing :(

“My name is Hoppi. I don’t have many friends, Linux doesn’t have many users…maybe I can be Linux’s friend.”

PS – You’re a stupid f*cking loser. Yes, I said it, you stupid n****r.

Oh god, PhpBB. Good luck with that UF.

@grubby
Did you expect any less?

@Hoppi
If you don’t want to hear bashing Linux, DON’T COME TO A SITE THAT BASHES LINUX.
