The practice of putting a dollar value on features then asking users to bid on these features with their cash.
This isn’t a new concept, or a bad one necessarily, especially when the project is unique. However, FOSS seems to have taken the idea of charity and turned it into a hostage situation. This is painfully evident when the features up for auction are ones found standard in competing products.
This isn’t like car company asking their buyer to shell out a little more for a deluxe sound system, it’s like asking them to to shell out to have a radio at all. Something every other car already has.

Uusally called a “Code Ransom.”
It’s particularly tragic in that the only people likely to pony up the money are idealistic ten year olds. I mean, $20 might not mean a lot to a basement dweller, but it’s a hell of a big deal for a little kid.
From a million eyes to a million venture capitalists … yeah, that’ll work.
