Yes it can wirh VirtuaWin. The reason it doesn‘t have it “out of the box“ is because it‘s somewhat confusing for most people and because most people don‘t reallly need it.

Absolutely… So long as window management is done correctly (such as Windows 7’s taskbar) there is no need to have multiple desktops to contain different windows in each.

Well, unless you’re surfing on less than appropriate sites at work…

Not only VirtuaWin, but you can also download Dexpot for free at www.dexpot.de

However since using Windows 7 I find that I don’t need or care about virtual desktops, and since my new Logitech mouse also includes preview options (a la Expose), the whole idea of multiple desktops seems stupid, backward, antiquated, out of date, useless, boring, hackish, overrated, overhyped, and just plain un-needed.

Wait, Ian:

Are you telling me that it’s possible to configure the Windows desktop?

But … but … we all know that’s impossible! It’s one of the most important features of Desktop Linux!

(I mean, you get to choose what borders the Big Brown Button has, before you press it and X crashes underneath you…)

VirtuaWin can’t hold a candle to Compiz Fusion

Or fvvm for that matter.

VirtuaWin can’t hold a candle to Compiz Fusion
And Compiz can‘t hold a candle to Window Blinds and whatever else is coming out from the Windows customizing scene (it‘s bigger than you think). Plus, most Compiz themes and effects are tacky, as they just thrown together without forming an aesthetic whole. What do burning windows have to do with falling snow when you rotate the cube? Nothing. At least Aero‘s effects create a cohesive metaphor, the one of a desktop made of glass. Aero (and most proffesionally made themes of Window blinds) are like a house designed by a professional interior designer. Compiz themes are a bunch of stuff purchased from the flea market, covering every wall, trying (unsuccesfully) to make an ugly ghetto house look cool. The getto house in question is X and the Gnomes, KDEs, xfce‘s of the typical Linux Desktop.

But the decision was about multiple desktops. As DigitalAtheist said, it‘s grossly overrated, useless for most users and barely of an achivement, as anyone can do it. Yet the loons pitch it as a comparative advantage over Windows.

Kurkosdr,

You can customize Compiz to do whatever the hell you want (including “Aero”-like effects). It’s composed of highly configurable plugins.

And I’m not to impressed with the Windoze “themeing” available. Besides, Mafia$oft DOES not support third party themeing. If you try to mess with Windoze in this way it requires hacking into Windoze and overriding system DLLs, who knows what you could break in the process.

Love how the subject got changed to stupid-ass wobbly windows.

My Windows Wobble.

Your argument is invalid.

No it does not. Just because you pirate everything doesn’t mean it’s required. Stardock’s WindowBlinds is an theming program that has Microsoft’s blessing and does not used hacked DLLs. In fact, you can make transitions as stupid as the ones you love on Linux — see: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e2/WindowFX_drag_out_transition.gif
