The common LY misconception that operating systems such as BSD and Solaris are simply distributions of Linux.

Here is an article that was Digged when FreeBSD 7.2 was released:

FreeBSD launches its new 7.2 version of its OS

The FreeBSD engineering team has released its new 7.2 version of its Linux operating system. This is the second release from the 7 series which improves on the features of FreeBSD 7.1.

What do Linux, BSD and Solaris have in common?

They are all based on UNIX.

well.. Yeah.. I’ve met a few LY’s seriously thinking that *BSD and Solaris was Linux! (maybe; Hence the claim that OSX and Ubuntu are the same?)

For an example, we could refer to our dearly beloved thomas B. :D

Wow, hard fail right thar. Linux is based on Minix.

Anyways, Linux is so great! How could you use anything else!

@Frak

Minix was based on UNIX.

Linux=Minux Minix=UNIX Linux=UNIX

@Reactosguy,

That’s what you call a “strawman” argument. Just because its “based on” Unix, does not “make it” Unix.

Linux has long since abandoned the Unix principles of simplicity, stability and testing. Instead its a mixture of unnecessary “next big thing but still in beta” and purists who can’t make up their mind.

I don’t see why anyone is even talking about what is based on what, when it’s completely irrelevant to the trademark.

It doesn’t matter what BSD or Linux are based on. The simple fact is that BSD and Linux are not the same thing, yet Linux Youth frequently confuse BSD as a distro of Linux.

@ReactOSGuy

Circle jerking BACK to UNIX doesn’t count.

Agreed, although you might want to edit the TM to make this clear. BSDisALinuxDistro™ almost invariably comes up in the following circumstances:

LH: I don’t even need Linux on the server.
LY: You use XP Server! Yer a M$hill!
LH: No I don’t. I use FreeBSD I also recommend OpenBSD and Solaris.
LY: But … but … these are all Linux distros!

@DrLoser, I agree, the TM should be expanded. I’ll do it in a while if Marvin isn’t planning on it.

I don’t want to be too pissy, but this is Marvin’s TM. It’s up to him to change it or not (within normal grounds of taste, etc…). I’m just pointing out that it might not convey his real beef.

Now, if you want to edit one of Hoppi’s trademarks …
