> At least Motorola is patenting standards.
Are really that stupid (STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!) or just blinded by your love with Android (piece of crap, BTW)?
You’ve got it backwards, kid. Motorola deliberately submitted their patented “ideas” (yes, it’s not standards that are patented – it’s “standard-essential ideas”). They’ve committed to FRAND terms for those patents. Now, when technology adopted – they try to use prohibitive fees.

> Microsoft is patenting ideas that are not normally eligible to protection (aka junk patents) and is asking huge royalties later.
Oh really. And it’s been so easy for you to back up this claim in the past. One recent example is when you’ve told that B&N invalidated “9000 thousand” (yes, exaggerating here) “crappy Microsoft patents” over prior art. Wait, you haven’t shown any. Now you’ve added “huge royalties” claim. Without any evidence again, I suppose?

Kurkos, would you please stop trying to comment on patent related issues? Just to not look stupid time over time over time.
First, yes, it’s backfired. Backfired at Motorola and Samsung. Apple brought anticompetitive use of monopoly issues too. EC itself started antimonopoly investigations (of Samsung’s conduct with regard of the same issues).

> Unlike Microsoft, which recently told the EC that it would grant patents on “fair and reasonable” terms
It’s not recently (have you even read this letter http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en/us/IntellectualProperty/iplicensing/ip2.aspx)? Microsoft’s OCP is a FRAND commitment (please go and check how “recent” is it), for example.

> While requiring 15$ for a 500$ (android) phone is OK, I suppose?
Whole patent portfolio is cheaper than WiFi only (then add another $25 for 3g, then add whatever you want for every small piece of non workaroundable crap that is there). Well, I must agree that it’s not OK.

Bawhaha!! The whole patent extortion scheme is backfiring badly for Microsoft: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2154405/microsoft-whinges-ec-google-motorola>

“Unlike Microsoft, which recently told the EC that it would grant patents on “fair and reasonable” terms, Motorola is being unreasonable, he said, and is demanding a royalty on a $1,000 laptop of $22.50.”

While requiring 15$ for a 500$ (android) phone is OK, I suppose? Microsoft has become very sleazy recently. At least Motorola is patenting standards. Microsoft is patenting ideas that are not normally eligible to protection (aka junk patents) and is asking huge royalties later. Since ideas are not part of any standard, they have no obligation to license them in FRAND terms. Don’t like that? Microsoft will cry “these are innovations” and you ll have to fight the junk patents in court, in an SCOvsLinux-esque battle.

A few things Pogson needs to consider;

1. Dynamic IPs. What’s he going to do, block an entire major ISP?
2. Free wi-fi is bloody well everywhere these days.
3. Proxy servers
4. Disposable email addresses are not hard to come by if he implements email registration.

I just don’t know if I can be bothered. I only ever started replying to him specifically in the first place because he jumped into an exchange with another poster, trying to score cheap points by selectively quoting me.

But he can turn his site into a debate-free echo-chamber, with only oiaohm for company, if he wants to. Without any dissenting opinion, the likes of lpbear, kozmcrae and the others of their ilk will disappear of their own accord, as they’ll have no targets for their insults and snarky comments.

As far as I’m concerned, banning someone for their valid remark is an admission of guilt.

It’s not as much an admission of guilt to Pogson as it is just a quick and dirty way to have the last words. The guy is simply too far deep into his zealotry to not have some moral justification to himself. Whatever you confront him with, it’s not a matter of technical or philosophical interests, but a mere obstacle in his goal to score a point for his chosen side, and he will stick to his arguments with or without you pointing out the flaws. Thus, when you debate with him at his blog, it’s not a matter of whether you will get banned, but when you’ll so, and your aim should never be about defeating him with words but influencing bystanders’ views on the issue.

How would you react if people prefixed replies to you with “Pogson, avoiding the direct questions, ignoring requests for evidence, fudging the maths in his favour, inserting non-sequiturs, going off on tangents and skirting the issue with nonsense, wrote;”?

It seems that Pogson has banned you for daring to speak out against his holiness. You’ll be forever honored as a great hero of the Interwebs.

I wonder if the Greg-Man has changed his mind about Nokia since?Jeez, sometimes watching the Loons is like listening to a bunch of hysterical girls at a High-School Prom. For me the Greg Man is one of the personally responsible for the sorry state of linux today. The stable API/ABI nonsense shows a new fascinating level of retardation.

The Nokia N900 was a fine machine. So was N9 and N950. But then Nokia realised that 1)If Maemo/MeeGo became a success, all those other manufacturers could use the software for free and 2) all the other manufacturers of the “MeeGo alliance” didn’t contribute a thing and expected from Nokia to do all the work, because they knew Nokia was the most dependent on MeeGo. So there was a situation where Nokia was paying the development costs, but everyone could use the software. That put Nokia in a disadvantage, because the price of their phones had software development + hardware costs in their price, while MeeGo phones from other manufacturers would have hardware costs only.

Better analogy would be Amiga zealots, who’s been probably the most annoying idiots in 90s, but peacefully died off with the death of Amiga itself. Oh, I’ve forgotten, Amiga The Survivor never dies – there are still zombies like AmigaOne. Funny though, that just like Mac it’s a 100% PC – the only differentiator is some lame OS (well AmigaOne also uses CPU that was bought-and-killed by Apple).
