Sigh. Fish in barrels, as usual.
- But really, is there anything here that Linux can’t do just as well for less money?
Pretty much everything, penguin-boy.
- I foresee a rollout of dozens of Linux-powered devices by the end of the year.
(That would be Linux-powered “iPad-competitive” devices, I assume. Bwahahahaaa…) When has SJVN ever admitted that his predictive capabilities are less reliable than sifting through turkey giblets? I predict it won’t be 31st December, 2010.
- If the vendors can’t beat the bottom-end iPad’s list price of $499, then they’re not really trying.
The original froth suggested a base price of $699 – $899. I’d suggest that a “bottom-end” (ie base) price of $499 is a pretty smart marketing move: it’s basically the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field applied to market expectations. Apple couldn’t possibly make a profit on hardware sold at $499. Could they?
- Acer, Asus, Dell and MSI [will] deliver … devices powered by the new Intel Atom platform for netbooks and small desktops.
Instant win for Linux, then. It worked so very, very well for netbooks and small desktops.
- And, last but not least, there’s Google with its Chrome operating system. It’s going to take longer to come to the market then the others…
... and have a substantially better chance of dominating the market for recipe books than of dominating whatever the “iPad” market is, or might become. I’m serious. I could just about see the recipe thing happening.
Is SJVN for real? Or is he just some sort of paid M$ Shill who writes reverse-trolling blogettes just for the yuks and the peanunts?

Robert Pogson fail:
“There are thousands of great products in GNU/Linux and some of them do stink especially if orphaned or betaware but that other OS has the whole OS smelling like rotten apples: re-re-reboots, endless vulnerabilities and corresponding malware, licensing quagmire, slowwwwinnnnggg down, etc.
GNU/Linux has strong leadership in depth and width right from the Linux group to several clusters of apps and windowing systems and many good choices if any does not suit the puposes of any user.
GNU/Linux has been around and delivering the good for a long time. By the middle 1990s there were a lot of users. By 2000 it started to become mainstream on the server. By 2009, it was mainstream on the desktop and lots of mobile thingies.
Apple has leadership but the leadership style means Apple will not for the forseeable future be everyone’s cup of tea. Many do not want to pay top dollar for IT. Many do not want to be restricted where they can run the software. Many want choice. Outside of USA/Europe, Apple’s share is dismal for PCs and it’s an also-ran for other stuff.
Globally, in corportate IT, GNU/Linux has serious leadership: IBM, RedHat, Novell, Oracle-Sun, ...
Saying GNU/Linux is lost is foolish. M$ does not say that. They say GNU/Linux is their biggest competitor after legacy products. GNU/Linux passed Apple in the PC space about 2003 and has progressed through good products and leadership.”
This single comment probably deserves it’s own FUD.
Joke not. I was very close to including the Pogster’s comment in the lead text — and then I thought: no, it’s not fair. He’s a senile, under-qualified, Canadian physics teacher who’s made himself a pleasant little life by migrating from ice-floe to ice-floe (each year a different school, or so he says).
We need to deny these people access to polite society, one by one. SJVN would be first, because he’s almost convincing (given enough alcohol or other drug).
Pogson is simply pathetic. I’ll be cruel here. For the sake of Northern Canada, Robert should also be plonked into a fridge and fired down the chute to a retirement home in somewhere nice and warm. Maybe the less foggy bit of Nova Scotia.
Northern Canada is a fine place, and has no need of Durden rigs. Ya hear me, Robert?
The problem with Pogson is that the idiot is a teacher, can you imagine the suffering his students go trough? If people that know more than this guy go through hell trying to reason with him in a blog, his students don’t stand a chance.
I’d say he’s a bigger problem than SJVN since he actually has authority over people.
Aaah… The good old SJVN..
Ever the optimistic lunatic.
