I’m actually being very unfair to Mr van Hoof there, because he’s really pointing out where X is fundamentally broken, clipboard-wise — and even offering suggested solutions.
I’ve linked it(1) because it’s a far better read than the various nitwit threads (eg this) wherein loons try to convince you that X does clipboards right. There are many of these.
No it bloody doesn’t. And this is a fundamental part of the desktop experience.
Or, to quote Mr van Hoof:
“The concept of the PRIMARY clipboard is broken and SECONDARY isn’t used. The only clipboard that really works and does what it’s supposed to do, is the CLIPBOARD clipboard.”
Step back a few paces. Squint. Marvel.
As with the rest of X, the clipboard is broken. But this is X, with ICCCM and the pixie-dust of backward compatibility. As it was in the beginning, so shall it be in the end…
(1) Well, I’ve linked near to it, because Thumbalizer handles pdfs — and for all I know, other exotic mime types — with all the grace of a pregnant hippopotamus slipping on a snowdrift. The actual link is this, fwiw.

Seriously, were do you find these?
You really aren’t going to believe this, but it’s God’s honest truth.
All I do is follow links off LHB — oiaohm is exceptionally good at linking to things that refute his arguments — or else the “community sites” tabbed here.
Seriously.
They’re either a goldmine, or else they’re hysterically funny on their own account.
