We all know that a computer is like a sacred temple. Never should the RAM be used, or the CPU forced to leave its idle states. That’s not what computers are for. They are meant to look pretty and sit on a desk without performing computations. On this premise we see a linked article to ComputerWorld. As is typical, the article does not manage to mention whether these surveyed systems are actually being forced to swap. The implication is no, since Windows 7 has a new, much improved, caching system and will consume tremendous amounts of RAM for various tasks. Fortunately, despite the lunacy rampant at Slashdot, the first comment explains these things. Shocking in that it was the first comment and actually explains things.

Boycott Novell chimes in again, completely missing the point that its not hogging memory. In computer science terms, memory that is cached from disk or network operations isn’t really being used. When more memory is needed it can simply be dropped without requiring a flush to the page file. Oh well. I guess it would be too much to expect of Linux advocates to actually understand operating systems. I mean, they are the tech savvy ones, er, wait, huh? Just goes to show that Linux really doesn’t teach you computer science.

After upgrading my PC recently, and enabling ReadyBoost on a fast usb stick, I’m actually glad that it uses much better the available resources. The system is incredibly responsive, and the only time I have to wait is because of the single slow 2.5” 5400RPM drive trying to keep up with the rest of the PC. I’m planning to add more drives for a silent RAID 0 configuration with three drives.

In any case it’s good that it’s trying to speed everything, as it’s still a good experience. Without all the RAM and other features in use, it woul’dve been slow as hell. In fact I wish Vista did the same by using all the RAM available instead of dumping things in the page file.

And from LHB, this: http://news.slashdot.org/story/10/02/21/2329249/Windows-7-Memory-Usage-Critic-Outed-As-Fraud?art_pos=4
