(Since apparently OMGCC doesn’t give a crap about this, I’ll just stick it here instead.)

Linus Torvalds speaks again, and you know it is time for him to admit himself to an asylum when even the Slashdot crowd thinks he has lost his marbles.

Seriously, people – if you want the smoking gun that Torvalds doesn’t care about productivity anywhere – neither on the desktop nor on the server – this is it. In case any one of you reading this still doesn’t get it, let me spell it out in black and white for you – Linux is Torvalds’ hobby, and it is going stay that way until either of these two is gone forever. His priority is his desire to tinker with the hardware, not your need to minimize maintenance costs by abstracting services as far away from it as possible.

He simply does not care.

“Screws are evil because I’m used to working with a hammer.” I like that.

So are keyboards, because I like my mouse…

“But how did you ty…[a mass facepalm ensues]”

#3 Posted by masterLoki on Aug 20, 2011 11:52 AM

LOL, just how evil am I, running Fedora 15 on virtualbox with a Win7 host?

#4 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 20, 2011 12:44 PM

That would be 7.3.22.3423 GigaDurden of evil.

Please note: due to the decree of our glorious leader, St.iGNUcius, the GigaDurden scale is now represented in build GNU/numbers, breaking the tyranny of the proprietary plain numbers!

Stay free comrades!

Damn, you beat me to it.

There’s so little intelligent fud out there these days, isn’t there?

#6 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 20, 2011 2:08 PM

It’s the bloody summer – even the freetards can’t be bothered to keep up with their antics.

#7 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 20, 2011 2:09 PM

Well, except for Poggie-San, I guess.

“with Greg Kroah-Hartman”

Let me spell it out for you.

“with Greg Kroah-Hartman.”

And there’s nothing at all wrong with that.

“He simply does not care.”

Yet, we have KVM and Xen in the kernel, as well as drivers for all major hypervisors, including Microsoft’s.

In fact, the only “hardware” that Linux works perfectly 100% of the time is virtual machines.

Gee, I guess Linus’s dictatorial grip is slipping. Or maybe, just maybe, he can differentiate between his personal opinion and professional decision because, you know, millions of people depend on it.

#10 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 20, 2011 8:42 PM

“Xen caused its own messy bed by not working well with the Linux kernel team, kernel experts say. The distro makers were ticked that the Xen team didn’t always keep up with the latest changes to the kernel, so supporting it in their downstream editions would mean they would have to take on the burden of updating it.”

Apparently there is such a thing as a “kernel expert” these days.

And apparently distro makers can dictate to every part of upstream other than Xen.

And apparently … you know what? This is just a ton of ignorant shyte, isn’t it?

Virtual machines are one of the best ways to waste resources accomplishing nothing.

#12 Posted by imgx64 on Aug 21, 2011 6:36 AM

“Virtual machines are one of the best ways to waste resources accomplishing nothing.”

Yeah, like running a business without buying any hardware. Or testing alpha software without destroying your system in the process. Or sandboxing different servers on a single machine. What a waste.

However, I do agree that some things I use virtual machines for are indeed a waste of time, like distro-hopping.

#13 Posted by JoeMonco on Aug 21, 2011 7:06 AM

“Yeah, like running a business without buying any hardware.”

Or running several different operating systems on the same hardware.

Or having fail-over done on-the-fly without downtime.

Or allowing for hardware migration without reinstalling everything.

Or just saving a good amount of electricity doing away with unnecessary hardware.

The funny thing is that virtualization is the only way to run DOS games decently, ever sice freetard-darling AMD killed Virtual8086.

#16 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 21, 2011 11:37 AM

“I’m not an Operating Systems sort of guy. I think Operating Systems are evil.”

I’d be fascinated to hear Torvalds explain how these two statements are not functionally equivalent.

(And before I get any bleats on the lines of “but you need an operating system,” consider that real-time embedded devices do quite well without one.)

#17 Posted by imgx64 on Aug 21, 2011 12:25 PM

“freetard-darling AMD”

I’m curious, why do you think AMD is favored by freetards over Intel? I’ve never seen such attitude myself, but I could be wrong.

#18 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 21, 2011 12:46 PM

Can’t give you a reference, unfortunately (maybe Joe can), but we’re going back to peak “Wintel” silliness here. There was a point, roughly a couple of years either side of 2000 if I recall, where freetards leapt on the “poor little guy” train of AMD simply because Intel was perceived to be hand-in-pocket with Microsoft.

It was, of course, classic Loon misdirection. But I have to 'fess up and admit that I agreed at the time — I deliberately hand-built computers on AMD chips, just because, and I was quite happy with the results.

Unfortunately, AMD appears to have fallen off a technical cliff since. And I’m not sure that Intel is particularly pleased by that.

#19 Posted by Adam_King on Aug 21, 2011 1:21 PM

I’m sure you guys never heard about these things called “processes”. They let you run multiple things on the same machine.

#20 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 21, 2011 2:00 PM

Genius, Adam!

Now, I want to run Debian GIMP on my Ubuntu 11.04 machine.

I wonder how I do that?

It’s a process, goddamnit!

Alternatively I could actually use a virtual machine.

Warning to small children and people who cannot even write “Hello world” without getting it wrong: virtual machines can be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Just go back to rubbing two sticks together, Adam.

#21 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 21, 2011 3:33 PM

Don’t say that, Doctor; he’ll hurt himself…

#22 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 21, 2011 4:05 PM

Hardly true, my dear Reverse Controller.

Adam is well versed in the intricacies of eschatological belief. It’s a wonder that he still cannot present a single representative example of his epic calculus-meets-hello-world proggy skillz.

But then again, we are Not Free and we are therefore Not Worthy.

We Are Not Worthy!

Golly gosh, Adam, help us! We need your idiot guidance!

Thinking for ourselves is just so passe, isn’t it?

#23 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 21, 2011 4:18 PM

Dear god, just look what happens now, when he only has a keyboard in his hands – I have no doubt bad things would happen if he had sticks.

But you are right, he is just as likely… nay, more likely to hurt somebody else.

#24 Posted by Adam_King on Aug 21, 2011 9:06 PM

I see the Winbreds flock to patting themselves on the back when they get served.

#25 Posted by ReverseControllerSE on Aug 22, 2011 2:01 AM

And I see you still can’t read – no worries, when it’s time for your eyes to go (they harvest them, you see), you’ll realise you’ve never needed them in the first place.

#26 Posted by imgx64 on Aug 22, 2011 2:10 AM

“simply because Intel was perceived to be hand-in-pocket with Microsoft.”

Ah, the enemy of my enemy’s friend is my friend, even if my new friend is my enemy’s friend too.

Great, now I have a headache.

#27 Posted by DrLoser on Aug 22, 2011 7:21 PM

Actually that was quite logical and concise. I could follow it with no problem at all.

Attempting to descry the meaning of the latest Queef rant from the visible giblets thereof, however … priceless.
