The majority of distro reviews tend to focus almost solely on the installation and the look of the desktop, and it’s especially true with the Ubuntu crowd.
Yeah I know it’s an outdated version of Ubuntu, but still. The theme repeats itself over and over again. A “newer” version of Ubuntu will have a new default wallpaper and some new (or retouched) icons and suddenly it’s “on par” with Windows and Mac, both in terms of looks and functionality. How anybody can say Ubuntu’s dull, ugly, brown, Windows-95-esque look can compare to any other modern OS offering is almost beyond belief.
The FUD rating on this isn’t very high, mainly because, amazingly, it throws Microsoft some praise. The writer still manages to squeeze out some good stuff, though. The general tone is that Apple, thanks to Windows and (ha!) Ubuntu, is in deep trouble. And of course, who can resist this little golden nugget:
Sure, there are some apps missing on Linux (say, Photoshop). But the same can be said of Mac OS X in certain areas, and VMware and CrossOver solve a lot of problems.

Subtle yet powerful … subtle yet powerful … subtle yet powerful.
OK, I’m sold. I have no idea why I just woke up with my underpants round my head, but I guess that’s all part of the process.
“... the new user interface team that Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth said at the time he would put in place.”
And then Mark walked away at 9.10.
When will these fools recognise that a cutting-edge Linux desktop doesn’t need another set of user interfaces (the shutdown options are now, apparently, sited in the “logical place” — woo hoo)?
A cutting-edge Linux desktop would require a sane approach to stable ABI/API, a sane approach to driver stacks, a sane distribution/update mechanism, a sane set of core applications, and a sane control of development and packaging? Not just another shade of brown, with icons moved around.
I don’t care that FreeBSD looks like crap. I do care that it actually works.
Until Ubuntu targets the FreeBSD model as a base, it’s basically a drug-addled wreck without the benefit of the high.
