The problem with finding FUD is that there’s such a massive load of it online, it’s difficult to know where to begin. Most FUD simply repeats the same claims over and over, thus finding exceptional, quality FUD is a bit rarer.

This old Linux.com article, circa 2003, is an example of the less-than-exceptional. Why have I included it here, then? Well, because what it lacks in juicy-FUDness, it makes up for in historicity. I particularly like this quote:

In a way, you can’t blame the Windows and proprietary software people for fighting as hard as they can against Linux. Their jobs are on the line, and Linux is now the world’s fastest-growing operating system.

Yeah. In 7 years, Linux’s desktop market has grown a whopping 1%, 2% if you’re being ultra-generous. The rest of the corporate world is absolutely shaking at the GreatLinuxThreat™.

The rest of the article is standard FUD-fare. Windows fans troll more than Linux fans, folks who criticize Linux are in bed with Microsoft, etc. It’s interesting to see how not much has changed in the better part of a decade, both in terms of the attitude of Linux zealots and in Linux adoption.

It ends off with a nice proclamation: the author WILL continue to use Linux, thank you very much, and just in case you’re not convinced, he throws in some false analogies for good measure.

The comments are a required read in themselves. One commenter pointed out how Microsoft’s shares are going up. Naturally, the Linux fans retort with MicrosoftMadeThatUp™.

“Do you think the petroleum industry, internal combustion engine makers, and gas stations operators would all go quietly into the night if, tomorrow, workable room-temperature fusion power plants small enough to fit in cars suddenly hit the market?”

Y’know, that’s a really interesting question. And quite appropriate, too.

Do I think Linux can be compared to a workable room-temperature fusion power plant small enough to fit in my car?

Why, I thought there were enough broken Toyotas out there already!
