I think it’s about time we had some Wikipedia FUD.

You know those charity begging letters that come around, roughly at this time of year?

“Will you help educate a child in the Third World by donating £3, £5, £10 a month, or whatever you can afford?”

Well, replace a child in the Third World with Brandon Harris, and that’s what he’s asking you to do.

The rest is standard Jimbo Wales1 guff, obviously (there’s a lot of Kool-Aid to share out between various Freetard communities), but I do rather like the disingenuous argument on the sidebar:

Technology: Servers, bandwidth, maintenance, development. Wikipedia is the #5 website in the world, and it runs on a fraction of what other top websites spend.

Oh, really. Does it? If it’s so fantastically efficient (assuming the fraction in question does not tend to 1.0 in either direction), then how about launching it as a revolutionary new server platform that will save the business world and also, at the same time, pay for that £3 I’m fucked if I’m going to give it?

Look, if you want to give your time away, then goody for you. But since you just swore off doing something that I would potentially pay you for …

... join the dots and don’t expect me to pay for what you are doing now.

Well, they need the money… you know, it’s free, you need to pay.

Makes perfect sense, really, it does.

That was epic! :D

So all 3rd world countries have their water and food problems sorted out, have PCs, internet and all they need to do to get second or first world countries is to read wikipedia?

Since you mentioned it, I never understood why the world has to help “those straving childre in Africa“. If their parents are so poor, why do they have children? But these are muslims we are talking about, they think is cool to have 14 children, even if they don‘t have figured out a way to feed them. Even if by some miracle we manage to feed all of “those starving child in Africa“, they will birth 14 children for each couple, which will increase the population of “that African country“ to 7 times of what is now, so in 40 years from now we will be back to square zero.

Everytime i see a starving child in one of those Unicef ads, i think “there is nature correcting the mistake of overbreeding“.

With the exception of the UAE (which is funded by insane amounts of oil dollars), show me an islamic country that doesn‘t suffer from over population. Eventually, all islamic countries will end up like Pakistan and Somalia, aka a state of balance where the number of excessive children born is equal to the ones that die from starvation, so i dont find a reason to help.

As regards wikipedia, Jimbo is notorious from trying to make money using weird methods, so i will not donate a cent till Wikipedia becomes more transparent regarding where the money goes, down to the last cent transparency.

I get your point, but what I was trying to say is that there is something called Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and wikipedia is on the very top of it. So f*ck those lame retorics, targeted at my consciousness, formulated in such way to make me uneasy.

Using the same argument – f*ck all those smug bastards at FSF, speaking of freedom and ethic.

> If their parents are so poor, why do they have children?

Well… Some people “don’t believe” in birth control (such as Catholics, but the Qu’ran does not prohibit birth control, and most denominations of Christianity also allow it), and they certainly aren’t going to keep it in their pants because of that.

The problem with Africa is that they don’t have access to birth control.

I bet they lay out all that information somewhere online… Why in the world would they make anyone pay for that? C’mon! That’d be too obvious! They just want to give, give, give!

... but then they expect to be given to. Isn’t that ironic? Those that give away everything then ask for everything so they can support their generosity? (Not that there is anything wrong with that, like charities, but they shouldn’t bitch and complain when no one wants to give, that’s one of the challenges that come with that type of business model — if you want to call it that)

What? Why is the f word allowed in the main post, but not in the comments? What kind of crap is that?
